Brown Doors

I love the colour brown!

My entire basement is brown, its cozy for those nice cold Canadian winter movie watching nights….! (pictures to come – once I get the upstairs completed)

When I told to my family that I was going to paint our interior doors brown : to complete the new updated feel…

Well, this was my youngest girls response.

All to often we fall back on tradition and paint our doors the same colour as our trim.  Same with our ceilings and while some feel that this helps to bring continuity to the home and  brightens the living space, I think its lazy!

Yes I said it – Lazy!

Beautiful colours can be used through out your home on unexpected  surfaces, to bring in originality and create a feeling of “Home”. Doors are one of those places.  Honestly if you are renting, painting out a few doors can help you instantly claim your space.  It takes a quart of paint  ( please used semi gloss ) and a brush.  An investment of approx. $30.00 for a WOW design statement. In regards to using a brush I am a traditionalist – brushing doors is the way to go.  Unless you have a sprayer  – but that’s another topic for another day. Just keep in mind that you need to paint in the “direction” of the “wood”  or how a door is made.  If its flat – by all mean paint vertically,  if it’s paneled, pay attention to the detail of the door.

When you paint doors out in a colour that continues the flow of the flooring you create a design statement.

The door colour I have chosen is Benjamin Moore paint – HC-72 – Branchport Brown.  This goes with the darkest part of the grain in my floor.

So to make my girls happier about the painted doors I allowed them to help.

My eldest is so serious and frankly painted better than most adults – ahhh great gene pool!

So where do you start and where do you finish?  The rule of thumb is what you see when the door is open is what you paint! You will always have to paint 2 of the 4 sides.  One outer lip and either the interior or exterior of the door. Two coats always!  But let the paint dry 12 hours before re coating – just say’n it make your life easier!

VOILA!!!

Love Barb

P.S. Emma didn’t even stay mad a me for 1 day- lucky me!
