Kitchen – The real story!

by Barbara on September 1, 2010

Kitchens are the centre of the Universe in my home.

Well, other than the T.V. or the computers, or the back deck…but the kitchen is what brings us all together starting as the sun rises until the sun sets.  And some times at 4am…I have a theory but thats for another time I still need to gather proof….

My kitchen originally was built for one, one person to do one thing at a time!  Two could cuddle but that is distracting and things tended to boil over and burn, so back to it being for ONE.

My family likes to cook, BBQ and bake.  Almost exlusively at the same time.  The kitchen had to change! It had to grow and make room for my two children who have begun to find the pleasure in making Mommy brownies and cookies – No More ONE!

Before my kitchen looked like this:

Then one Christmas party in 2010 I found my friends sitting in two different rooms!  One group in the kitchen and one group in the living room.  (Which is through the door you see and to the left.)  This wouldn’t do I tell ya!  Victor and I took turns rotating through the groups but in the end we came to the conclusion that this year, was the year for change.  This year we were renovating the kitchen ( little did we know what that decision meant).

We started in June – with the fast paced part, adrenaline filled portion of the renovation – “the Demolition” Please see below!

We started to open the door to the dining room – and by we I mean them…

This time was without a doubt the most fun!  When the door  became an arch the light flooded into our space!   The next few steps were slow but important..electrical, plumbing, sealing and insulating.  Here is where I should have asked to have the exterior water tap moved, yup at this stage.  But I didn’t….

Now everything starts going back up!

and paint!

Ohh Ohh Flooring going in! I have to switch sides now, for the pictures, so I will be standing with my back against the wall behind the garbage bag…

Ohh Ahhh – I know yummy…We are almost there folks! Can you tell I took pictures almost everyday?!

Cabinets going in!  Yeah!  The island is going in and we are waiting for the butcher block

The cabinets are now in, as are those brown doors.  We have moved in, we have lined to drawers, we have unpacked and realized we still have way to many kitchen items.  We love this room, and as in we – I mean me!

Waiting on new butcher block, stools and some organization…that last one will be tricky!

Marble Can Be Addictive

by Barbara on August 31, 2010

Marbling

.

I LOVE to dumpster dive.  It all started when I was at University.  In Theatre “borrowing” and garbage hunting were ways we created  our sets and stayed on budget.  This is how I fell in love with painting in the first place.  Taking one item and making it either look worn or making something worn look new.  Heck, even making look like it was from another universe….It still put this to practice almost every time I work on a project.  Although now a days its more making “worn’ look new!

Wow it is tangent blogging today:

Ok Back to marbling!

In Woodbridge we have several places you can purchase marble for just about anything.  This means there are dumpsters in the back of these beautiful places where one, such as I, can pick and choose real marble pieces to  copy and create and practice veining and layering and playing and creating…

I have an addiction.  My husband just cleaned out the garage and snuck three buckets of perfectly good marble away…Tee Hee – back to the dumpsters for me…shhhhhh…don’t tell Vic!

Love Barb

P.S. You will need gloves, a rag or two sturdy buckets and permission from the front of the store.  Be prepared for weird looks!

Front Entrance – Organization and Pretties!

August 19, 2010

Organization and Routine = Peace and Pretty I personally find that decorating front entrances can be challenging, after all they are the “first impression” you make on guests when the come over! How I became a Decorative Artist

August 6, 2010

In 1995 (oh my is sounds like a long time ago…in a basement far far way…) I was working on samples for a client at 4am. I was trying to figure out a name for my new company. I wanted it reflect how passionate I feel about paint, colours, and design. I wanted to let [...]

Orange you glad I chose this colour?

July 14, 2010
This entry is part 5 of 5 in the series My Renovation

I have a question: Why do builders build the homes the way they do? Really,  is there no thought whats so ever? My powder room is a normal powder room on the main floor.  It has a sink and a toilet and a window – pretty stock powder room. The problem is a heating vent [...]
